Social and Emotional Learning

Compassion

The learning activity is a great way to kick start the changes we can assist our students to make when it comes to being a good bystander.  Let us know what you thought by leaving some feedback in the comments.

Definition of Bullying

Any action that is hurtful, purposeful and repeated.

People involved:

The Bully

The Target

The Bystander

Types of Bullying:

–         Physical – hitting, pushing, shoving, kicking etc.

–         Emotional/Verbal – put downs, rude words, threats, humiliation

–         Cyber – bullying via email, phone, internet

–         Exclusion – actively leaving others out

Actions the target can take:

Step 1: Decide if you are being bullied.

Is it hurtful, purposeful and repeated?

Step 2: Tell the bully how it makes you feel.

“Stop, I don’t like it when you do that”

“That really hurts me”

Step 3: Tell a trusted adult – Teacher or Parent

Use the words “I am being bullied”

Step 4: Ask the adult what actions they will take to help you

Other ideas:

–         Talk to friends

–         Print out copies on cyber bullying and hand to an adult

–         Be in the “neutral zone” not passive or aggressive.

The Bystander

X Negative Bystander actions:

–         Ignore the bullying

–         Encourage the bully

–         Watch and do nothing

Positive Bystander actions:

–         Tell the bully no

–         Tell the target to walk away

–         Tell an adult

The Natural Progression of Bullying

Start as a bystander

Become a target

End up as a Bully

I learnt the Four rules of bullying,
    1) Decide if you are really being bullied.
    2) Tell the bully how you really feel.
    3) Report to an adult about your bullying.
    4) Ask the adult what they are going to do to stop the bullying.

    • Dear Robert,
When writing and speaking make sure you use many instead of much. For example ‘I can bring home so many strategies to do if I get bullied’.

Today’s incursion was really fun because Josh and Jenna explained the types of bullying. Best of all they presented it in a play! which was fun to watch and learn. I really enjoyed listening to the stories (some were true!) and the way they were dealt with.
I have learnt alot about the power of one.
